Penny regains consciousness in hospital
in Penzance after a car crash. She cannot remember who she
is or why she is in Cornwall. She takes a job as companion
to an invalid, Demelza, whose brother Trevellyan seems to
have doubts about whether Penny’s memory loss is genuine.
Memories begin to surface through nightmares and these intensify
with the arrival in the area of Justin Brookes. Penny suspects
that either Justin or Trevellyan has some connection with
her past, and she does not know whom to trust. She realises
she has fallen in love with Trevellyan, but is unable to gauge
his feelings for her.
Love triumphs in the end, but only after Penny remembers her
past and understands why she was trying to escape it.
